  • The concepts of ideational and interpersonal metaphor are introduced in Halliday‟s An Introduction into Functional Grammar (1985) in which he differentiates his newly-identified grammatical metaphor from “figures of speech” metaphor. This article is devoted to interpreting the three major types of typical patterns of the ideational grammar of behavioral clauses in English and Vietnamese within the framework elaborated by Halliday and Matthiessen (2000, 2004); Martin et al. (1997) as well as making comparisons of these patterns in the two languages. Attention has been paid to describing a wide range of constructions and shift patterns of ideational metaphor (transitivity metaph...

  • The traditional Vietnamese fermented pickles are naturally produced in presence of a microbial community including lactic acid bacteria and other microbes. Lactic acid bacteria play important roles in vegetable fermentation, whereas some yeasts have contributions to aromatic formation. However, the fermented products are sometimes spoiled by contamination of unknown bacteria during fermentation. In this study, we isolated three bacterial strains including KG 2.2, KG 2.3 and KG 2.5 in which their growth causes spoilage of the fermented pickles with formation of white biofilm layers. On basis of morphological and biochemical characteristics, these bacterial strains belong to Bacillus ge...

  • System identification is an established field in the area of system analysis and control. It aims to determine particular models for dynamical systems based on observed inputs and outputs. Although dynamical systems in the physical world are naturally described in the continuous-time domain, most system identification schemes have been based on discrete-time models without concern for the merits of natural continuous-time model descriptions. The continuous-time nature of physical laws, the persistent popularity of predominantly continuous-time proportional-integral-derivative control and the more direct nature of continuous-time fault diagnosis methods make continuous-time modeling of...

  • As the proportion of the elderly population (those aged 60 and over) keeps increasing quickly in most countries in the world, issues related to older people’s employment behavior have drawn a great deal of public attention. The ageing workforce will result in the labor shortage and place a huge burden on the public pension system in the near future. Therefore, governments are encouraging older workers to continue working later in life, and to delay their retirement to offset the dependence on the support of younger workers. In the attention to delay the retirement age it is interesting and important to identify what factors affect employees’ decisions to early retire. This paper aims...

  • Attacks take place everyday with computers connected to the internet, because of worms, viruses or due to vulnerable software. These attacks result in a loss of millions of dollars to businesses across the world. Identifying Malicious Code through Reverse Engineering provides information on reverse engineering and concepts that can be used to identify the malicious patterns in vulnerable software. The malicious patterns are used to develop signatures to prevent vulnerability and block worms or viruses. This book also includes the latest exploits through various case studies. Identifying Malicious Code through Reverse Engineering is designed for professionals composed of practiti...

  • By age 16, significant – one might even say "alarming" – numbers of students are demonstrating signs of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Students with PTSD are more likely to develop a range of problems, from delinquent behavior to eating disorders to substance abuse to dropping out. For the school-based professional, the ability to recognize these symptoms and warning signs is essential.

  • The issue of identity and identity negotiation has recently attracted much interest from researchers worldwide as the world is becoming a global village. The past few decades have witnessed a rapid growth in the number of students pursuing further education abroad as well as the number of colleges and universities from all parts of the world offering overseas study programs. Today, not only English speaking countries are ideal destinations of overseas education but many other countries where English is not the frst language also attract millions of students worldwide. In such countries, students have to use English for their academic purposes but at the same time need to know th...

  • Idioms in both English and Vietnamese are regarded as special language units because they usually have their own typical fixed properties. However, in fact, we can see a lot of idioms violating the principles of these fixed properties. They are idiom variants and synonymous idioms. This article is about their signs and forms as well as the similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese in terms of these.
