  • Objective: To investigated the protective potential of ethanol extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis (S. baicalensis) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver injury. Methods:Dried roots of S. baicalensiswere extracted with ethanol and concentrated to yield a dry residue. Mice were administered 200 mg/kg of the ethanol extracts orally once daily for one week. Animals were subsequently administered a single dose of LPS(5 mg/kg of body weight, intraperitoneal injection).   • Recently, the resources of medicinal plants have been exhausting. The root ofAngelica acutilobais one of the most important ingredients in Japanese Kampo medicine for the treatment of gynecological diseases. In our search for alternative medicinal plant resources of the root ofA. acutiloba, we found that its aerial part has the anti-inflammatory potency as well as the root.   • Alnus japonicaSteud is a tree that grows in damp areas of mountain valleys and has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia. We investigated the antiproliferative activity of hirsutanone (Hir) and oregonin (Ore) in human cancer cell lines and elucidated their mechanisms of action. A cytotoxicity study using a panel of 12 human cancer and 4 normal cell lines indicated that Hir exhibited potent antiproliferative activity against 4 leukemia (Jurkat, U937, THP-1, and HL-60) and 2 colon cancer cell lines (HCT-15 and Colo205). Although Ore suppressed the cell growth of Jurkat and THP-1, its inhibitory potency was weaker than that of Hir. The IC50 values of Hir and Ore in Jurkat were 11.37 M and 22.16 M, respectively.   • Tetracera scandens L. (Dilleniaceae) is a genus of flowering plants of the Dilleniaceae family. It has been reported that Tetracera scandens L. content hight amout of flavonoids. From the ethanol extract of leaves of Tetracera scandens L, we have been isolated six known flavonoids compounds. Their structures were identified as quercetin-3-O-L-rhamnoside (1), genistein (2), quercetin (3), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucuronide (4), kaempferol (5) and quercetin-3-O-α-L-arabinofuranoside (6) on the basis of spectroscopic data and by comparing their physicochemical and spectral data with those published in literatures

  • The roots of Aconitum Carmichaeli Debx. is recognized as a medicinal plant by its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Our phytochemical investigation of the roots led to the isolation of three alkaloids including delcosine (1), fuziline (2), and karacoline (3).   • Licorice (Glycyrrhizaspecies) is an important natural product that is frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. In this review article, we discuss the quality control of licorice using monoclonal antibodies against the licorice components glyzyrrhizin (GC) and liquiritin (Liq); the monitoring of licorice extract activity using an assay system in mice; and the isolation of two active phenolic components, isolitiritigenin and formononetin, and their effectiveness for improving in vitrofertilization in mice.
