  • This paper discusses some of the major questions with regard to types of language competence, the relationship between language 1 (mother tongue) and language 2 (foreign language) as well as elements of language competence in relation to culture. The paper stresses the fact that language competence involves both written and spoken language. In a broad sense, this competence would translate into speaking, listening, reading, writing and translating skills. Also, it is important to keep in mind that the acquisition of speaking and writing in a target language is conditional upon a host of factors apart from socio-cultural knowledge, hence different teaching & learning methods are called for.

  • The English and Vietnamese corpora have shown similarities between English and Vietnamese in terms of preference organization concerning the speech act of disagreeing. Disagreements, structurally marked and thus dispreferred because of their structural complexity and counter-productive effects, are often softened or hedged. However, disagreements to self-denigrations, which are structurally unmarked and thus preferred, are prone to be forthrightly proffered. The two kinds of disagreements seem to work in absolutely opposing directions so th at they can minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive impacts of disagreement tokens to prior self-deprecations. • Từ hai thực từ ban đầu (chăng và không một gốc Việt, một gốc Hán), ngày nay tiếng Việt có ba từ chăng, chẳng và không cùng đứng trong một nhóm lớn hơn với các từ phủ định: đừng, chớ, chưa {chửa). The author reviews different approaches to modes and modalities by different scholars and works out the arrangement of modes in natural languages. In addition, he analyses main types of lexico-modal markers in Vietnamese and English.

  • The learners of French often meet some difficulties with phraseology which consists of fixed phrases in language (expressions, locutions, collocations and complete sentences). They are in great number, complex in Syntax-Semantics and have been researched from different angles with different names. The term used widely as “locution”. • We used rhetorical figures in discourse to create impression, increase persuasion and show subjective ideas. Rhetorical figures may be created basing on the vocabularies and grammatical structures which are used in particular ways. Because of that discourse with rhetorical figures can’t be translated with summarising or explaining. The translating of rhetorical figures follows special ways of translating. The rate of fidelity to the original discourse may depend on the rhetorical figures’ effects saved.

  • Trong bất cứ một ngôn ngữ nào, các từ cũng được tổ chức và chi phối bởi các quan hệ khác nhau. NHững mối quan hệ này gắn kết các từ lại với nhau thành các cụm từ, câu và các tổ chức lớn hơn, phục vụ cho mục đích giao tiếp. Quan hệ tính ngữ là một trong các kiểu quan hệ như vậy.
