  • This paper presents the innovations in teaching writing skills to students of English in Vietnamese upper-secondary schools. The paper starts by presonting a number of approaches to teaching writing : the conirolled-to-free practice approach , the free-writing approach, the paragraph - paitern approach, the cominunicative approach, and the process approach. Then it turns to outline the approacli to teaching writing in Vietnamese upper-secondarv schools. It is suggested that the approach to teaching writing in upper secondary schools is a combination of a number of approaches in which the communicative and the process aproaches play a dominant role.   • Meaning and sense are two interrelated concepts instrumental in verbal communication. They are at the crossroads of many disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, and psycholinguistics. Study of meaning and sense may hold out important implications for foreign language teaching and learning. However, as is noted, the existing amount of research on these entities still fails to shed light on the nature and use of them. This paper makes another attempt to redefine the nature of, relationship between, and the development of, thêse two concepts. Thus, foreign language education can be facilitated, and put on a more scientific and effective footing.
