Abstract: In this article, an attempt is made to look at the teaching of listening in a foreign language environment, an environment in which there is always a lack of practice outside the classroom. The paper starts with the background to the teaching of listening skills. Then it presents the top -down and bottom-up approaches to listening, and some types of text which are commonly used for teaching listening skills. These are followed by the last two sections, one is concerned with the problems experienced by students when listening to a text and the other with some suggestions on how to teach listening skills in the Vietnamese context. It is suggested that in order to teach listening effectively, the teacher should prepapre the students for their listening tasks and the students must be given ample opportunities for practicing listening. It is also suggested that the teacher should build a systematic plan and use the most appropriate methods and techniques of teaching listening.
