Authors: Đỗ, Thị Anh Thư (2018-11-17) - This article discusses the concept of learner autonomy in learning foreign
languages, some misunderstandings of learner autonomy, and the roles of teachers
in fostering learner autonomy to be carried out with students of an intensive course at a
Vietnamese university. It challenges traditional role of teachers in the past as a transmitter in
class. In order to develop learner autonomy, it is necessary for teachers to be in other forms of
roles such as manager and organizer, facilitator and counselor. In the context of an intensive
course, this issue is relatively unfamiliar and thus little investigated. This article will conclude
with suggestions on the appropriate roles of lan...

Authors: Nguyễn, Thanh Vân (2018-11-17) - There has been an increasing body of research that suggests teachers to do
research in their own classrooms in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
In this sense, action research has been considered an effective professional development
tool by several educational researchers, and English language teaching profession is of
no exception. However, there usually exists the distance between researchers’ suggested
practices and practitioner’s beliefs and real actions. This study is aimed at investigating
how Vietnamese EFL teachers at a university (N=30) perceive action research itself and
the roles action research can play in those teachers’ professional developmen...

Authors: Nguyễn, Thị Thùy Linh (2018-11-17) - The relationship between emotion and language has appealed to linguists as well
as psychologists. It is language that enables us to communicate our emotion to other people.
Through language we can articulate our inner feelings by referring to our emotional states
explicitly (e.g. with nouns or adjectives like happiness, sadness, anger or happy, depressed,
angry) or implicitly by using, for example, fgurative language such as metaphors, thereby
expressing evaluative meanings. It is a well established fact that abstract and mental entities
are often conceptualized with the help of metaphoric language. Figurative descriptions help
us to communicate subjective, international phenom...

rằng tất cả các câu hát đều có yếu tố hiệp vần. Chính yếu tố hiệ...

Authors: Nguyễn, Thị Thùy Trang (2018-11-17) - Vietnam, comprehensive education reforms, and the project entitled “Teaching and
Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System, Period 2008-2020” have drawn
much attention to teacher training. More considerably, much concern has been paid to three
pilot English curricula for Vietnamese schools. Several challenges may arise for English teachers
who directly work with the new set of textbooks in their application of the pilot textbooks in
various provinces with quite distinguished economic, social and cultural features. Addressing
teachers’ concerns in order to help them in their real teaching practice is of great signifcance.
However, literature review reveals litt...

Authors: Đỗ, Tuấn Long (2018-11-17) - The study aims at exploring the lexical representations of the English preposition
over in the light of Lexical concepts and Cognitive models. We advocate the idea by Evans that
over, as a linguistic vehicle paired with other units, encodes distinct lexical concepts (2009).
The data were collected from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, 2017 Spoken
and analyzed with content-based methods. It is found that "over" denotes 17 lexical concepts,
encoded by distinct syntactic and semantic structures; and Lexical concepts and Cognitive
models together with image-schema would shed light on the lexical representations of over
to account for its distinct senses/ concepts.Nghiên...

Authors: Chowdhury, Raqib (2018-11-17) - Often to be ‘critical’ is seen as pejorative - as synonymous to fnding fault, and in
the academic context this is also often seen as a sign of disrespect, even arrogance - hence
best avoided. Yet studies and research at the graduate level and beyond are quintessentially
founded upon our understanding and practice of criticality and critical thinking. This
presentation unpacks the philosophical foundations upon which criticality in the social
sciences is based, and offers insights into some questions - how can we be critical without
being judgemental? How can a critical outlook enhance our understanding of theories? How
can we best reflect our critical stance in our writing?
In a...
