  • The effects of industrialization on economic and employment structure changes in Vietnam during economic transition.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen; Doan, Thanh Tinh (2011)

  • This paper presents the effects of industrialization on economic and employment structure during the economic transition in Vietnam. Although Vietnam has made a significant progress in changing economic structure in which the share of agricultural contribution in GDP has dramatically decreased over the last two decades, the employment structure changed slowly. Consequently, majority of labour force is still in the agricultural sector. The economic reform has failed to shift redundant workers away from agricultural sector since most of the country’s investment has been allocated to capital-intens ive industries. Therefore, policy adjustments are needed to absorb more redundant worker...

  • Studies of the linkage between exports and profitability often use mean regression approaches and focus only on European countries. Using a panel data quantile regression approach, this study analyses the linkage between export behaviour and profit growth in Vietnam. Using a panel dataset from 2005 to 2009, our results show an insignificant linkage between export status and firm profit growth when using OLS.

  • Using a novel dataset from a 2010 household survey involving 477 households, this study provides the first econometric evidence for the impacts of farmland loss on nonfarm diversification among households in Hanoi's peri-urban areas in Vietnam. The results from fractional logit and fractional multinomial logit models indicate that farmland loss has a negative effect on the share of farm income but a positive effect on the share of various nonfarm incomes, notably informal wage income.

  • Farmland and Peri-Urban Livelihoods in Hanoi, Vietnam - Evidence from household Survey Data in Hanoi's Peri-Urban Areas.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen;  Advisor: Steven Lim (2013)

  • The paper uses cluster analysis techniques, based on identification of household income shares by source, to provide the first classification of five livelihood strategies pursued by households in Hanoi's peri-urban areas. Income sources and total income are compared across livelihood strategies using Bonferroni pairwise tests and first-order stochastic dominant analysis. The findings of the study show that non-farm income sources mainly contribute to total household income, strategies based on formal wage work and non-farm household businesses are the most remunerative ones and strategies based on farming and informal wage work are the most inferior ones.

  • Income sources and inequality among ethic minorities in the Northwest region, Vietnam.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen (2015)

  • This study analyzes the sources of income inequality among ethnic minorities in the Northwest region - the poorest and highest inequality region of Vietnam. Using an analysis of Gini decomposition by income source, the results show that while agricultural income, notably crop income, considerably decreases income inequality, off-farm income sources are found to increase inequality…

  • Livelihood Strategies for Coping with Land Loss among Households in Vietnam's Sub-Urban Areas.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen (2013)

  • Using a novel data set from my household survey in a sub-urban district of Hanoi, Vietnam, this study is the first attempt using an econometric approach to investigate the relationship between farmland loss and households' livelihood strategies. The results from the multinomial logit model provide the first econometric evidence that land loss increases with the probability of households adopting a strategy specializing in a single nonfarm activity or diversifying in many activities.

  • Nonfarm employment and household income among ethic minorities in Vietnam.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen (2015)

  • This study examines the determinants of nonfarm participation and the effect of nonfarm employment on household income among ethnic minorities in the Northwest Mountains, Vietnam. The logistic regression analysis shows that education and the availability of local enterprises or trade villages, notably among other factors, have a significantly increasing impact on the likelihood of taking up wage employment, while the presence of paved roads gives households more chance to engage in nonfarm self-employment.

  • A note on poverty among ethnic.pdf.jpg
  • Article

  • Authors: Tran, Quang Tuyen; Nguyen, Hong Son; Vu, Van Huong; Nguyen, Viet Quoc (2015)

  • This article is the first to investigate both community and household determinants of poverty among ethnic minorities in the Northwest region of Vietnam. Results of a fractional logit and a logit model show that fixed assets, education and off-farm employment, among other household factors, have a strongly reducing effect on both the intensity and incidence of poverty. Furthermore, some commune characteristics were found to be closely linked to poverty…
