  • Results of the study showed that students of 11th grade in a school in Lao Cai encountered a number of problems in reading such as the lack of language and background knowledge, low level reading skills, lack of reading resources and time for practicing. All those factors were attributed to their lack of interest in reading. Short story reading activity, after being applied, was proved to have the positive impacts on motivating students to read.   • The findings showed that collaborative writings were slightly shorter than individual writings but observably more accurate and slightly grammatically and lexically more complex. Furthermore, collaboratively produced writings had more main ideas and supporting ideas, as well more high-leveled words with clearer and more logical organization. In addition, students had both positive and negative attitudes after the first time of implementation but all students positively reacted toward collaborative writing after two writing cycles.   • There is a preference over using Type 1 (Verb-Noun) and Type 2 (Adjective-Noun) which account for 40.6% and 36.9% of the identified collocations respectively. In contrast, students tend to use a limited number of the other types, especially Type 3 (Noun-Verb) and Type 4 (Quantity- Noun). With respect to the second research question “What are the common errors students make in using lexical collocations in writing an essay?”, the data show that among 187 collocations found in the sample writings, 51 collocations were incorrectly used.   • The research was conducted on two classes with different English proficiency. TO be more specific, the students in class 1.1 has low English proficiency, while those in class 1.1 has higher English proficiency. The research consisted of two phases with a pre-test and post-test in each phase. The students’ reading test results increased from the pre-test to the post-tests in both phases, and the standard deviations decreased in each test.   • Regarding to the first research question, the result of the survey questionnaire proved that the use of flip teaching method brought a considerable improvement to the chosen school’s grade 11th students’ active learning.Regarding to the teacher’s consideration of applying the flip teaching method to the students, the analysis of teaching diaries has suggested some ways to effectively implement flipped teaching method. Regarding to the third research question, the results of Pre- and Post-intervention Quick Survey and group interview proved that the use of flipped teaching method improved students’ active learning.

  • There are 24 conceptual metaphors denoting the theme of loss of innocence in the two novels - The Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Flies. The loss of innocence is conveyed differently yet quite similarly in the two works. In detail, with Catcher, the theme of innocence is expressed via Holden’s points of view. Holden thinks that innocence and goodness are no more when children enter adulthood. Metaphor like LIFE IS A GAME has shown his disdain of the world. Although they sometimes felt hatred to homework completion on account of its difficulties and its vast quantity, they still believed homework played an integral part in their accademic performance and formed indispensable study skills.   • The purpose of the research was to investigate the effects of concept maps on improving the eleventh grade students’ English grammatical knowledge. The significant findings are presented as follows. Firstly, the grammatical knowledge of the students participating in the research was greatly improved after applying concept maps to grammar teaching and learning. From the results of the tests collected, it can be seen that the mean value of the pre-test is 6.178 while the mean value of the post-test is 7.200.
