Tuy nhiên, vị tiền bối của ngữ dụng học hiện đại là nhà ngôn ngữ học Liên Xô V.N. Voloshinov, người đã đi trước Austin tới bốn chục năm trong việc xây dựng một hệ thống triết học ngôn ngữ khá hoàn chỉnh, cho phép vượt qua những giới hạn của ngôn ngữ học truyền thống, đặc biệt là ngôn ngữ học cấu trúc của Saussure, để nghiên cứu ngôn ngữ trong quá trình giao tiếp xã hội sống động.
