  • This paper investigates the identities constructed of LGBTQIA+and how they are constructed by a particular speaker in a TED talk adopting a CDA perspective. Drawing on Fairclough‘s three-dimensional model and by analyzing the language used in the TEDTalk, this study finds that the speaker constructs a range of LGBTQIA+ identities, including identities related to gender, sexuality, and intersectionality. Additionally, the analysis reveals that the speaker uses a variety of linguistic and rhetorical strategies, such as metaphor and repetition, lexical devices and the rhetorical triangle which are categorized as logos, ethos and pathos, and rhetorical question to construct and re...

  • This Master’s Thesis is based on the combination of Fairclough’s concept of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s Social Semiotic Analysis (SSA). CDA has become a separate field within applied linguistics and is continuously modified to new phenomena, one of which is multimodal text. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of framing devices, integrating the CDA framework by Fairclough (1989) as well as to prove that multimodal analysis is now taking a prominent place in news media analysis. This thesis aims to work out the definition and framework of framing, apply the framework for the analysis of some Vietnamese and American newspaper front...

  • This study employs a combined approach, drawing upon van Leeuwen’s (2008) social action framework, Halliday’s transitivity system, and CharterisBlack’s (2004) critical metaphor analysis to examine the representation of the Vietnamese Government's response to the 4th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study uncovers four significant findings that shed light on the portrayal of the government's actions and its image during this critical period. Firstly, the use of instrumentalized and objectivated material actions, along with non-transactive semiotic actions, reveals a powerful government with autocratic leadership. These linguistic choices emphasize the government's assertive an...

  • The Vietnam War is one of the most dreadful and controversial events in the human history in the 20th century. This study attempts to investigate the dynamic and critical metaphorical conceptualization of the war from the perspectives of the insiders – American war correspondents– through an evaluation of the conceptual metaphors used in their articles published during the wartime. Methodologically, the current study applies a proposed integrated framework of Critical Metaphor Analysis – CMA (Charteris-Black, 2004) and Multi-level View of conceptual metaphor – MLV (Kövecses, 2017a) in order to gain deeper insights into ideologies motivating metaphorical concepts for the war as ...
