The Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) has realised a great important role of biodiversity conservation to a sustainable development of mankind. In order to meet overall objectives of CBD, it is necessary for each Contract Party to identify components of biodiversity that have conservation values and how to monitor their changes under social-economic conditions as well as under impacts of conservation measures. This paper first gives an overview of approach, principles and steps in development of biodiversity indicators at national level as guided by the CBD. Then the paper provides some recommendations for Vietnam in developing a set of national-level biodiversity indicators to be monitored which take into account financial and technical capability as well as data availability of the country.
