dc.description.abstract | Along with the rapid expansion of audiovisual materials, subtitling has enjoyed greater attention, even though it is still a new and underresearched area. A part of it is the subtitling of non-standard language, especially slang. The researcher attempted to offer a look into the subtitling of slang, in terms of the subtitling strategies employed to translate slang and the assessment of its quality. Two episodes of the TV series Breaking Bad and its Vietnamese subtitled version by Netfix were chosen as the subject of the study. Slang items are identified and documented. Base on the framework put forward by Gottlieb (1992), eight out of ten subtitling strategies applied to translate such slang items into Vietnamese are recoreded, with Transfer being the most favourable one. Furthermore, the researcher adopt the penalty score system named FAR model (Pedersen, 2017) to assess the quality of the Vietnamese subtitling of such slang items in terms of functional equivalence, acceptability, and readability. Even though there are errors, the understanding and viewing experience of the audience is not severely disturbed. | vi |
