The ways of expressing the futurity in an English literary work and their Vietnamese translation version

Abstract

This study would like to indicate ways of expressing futurity in English andmakeacomparison with Vietnamese translation version. This research formways of expressingfuturity in English in the aspects of grammatical means and lexical means. Thestudypoints out the most dominant construction and mostly used by the writer of theliterarywork to express futurity. This research collects data from Harry Potter and theOrderofthe Phoenix. The results from statistical qualitative analysis can showthe all constructionsexpressing futurity in English and their translation in Vietnamese version. This researchapplies qualitative research to make a statistic of collected data fromHarry Potter andtheOrder of the Phoenix. Its outcome shows common constructions expressingfuturityinEnglish. There are 7 ways extracted from academic English sources, the most popularconstruction is modal auxiliary Will. In terms of grammatical means, constructionmodalauxiliaries make up the most percentage of grammatical means. To lexical means, hope,be sure, want are used more than others. Finally, major futurity expressioninEnglishafter translated to Vietnamese, the principal constructions are hope (roughly translatedashy vọng, mong rằng in Vietnamese). Similarities of both languages about futurityexpressare semantic meaning of future shown by a combination of grammatical meansandlexical means. Section of differences are analyzed more detail in this paper. Thestudysimultaneously indicates accompanied factors with futurity expression of characters' utterances. Furthermore, this research discovers that ways of expressing futurityareinherent in temporal concepts frequently through analysis of semantic meaningofgrammatical and lexical employment. By identifying similarities and differences betweenlanguages, the research contributes to academic understanding and facilitatesmoreaccurate communication and translation.
