In 2002 the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme has celebrated its tenth anniversary. Conceived by the Division of Higher Education (ED/HED), which was subsequently designated as its House-wide manager, the Programme was established in 1992 following the relevant decision of the General Conference of UNESCO taken at its twenty-sixth session. It was launched with the aim of developing interuniversity co-operation, while emphasizing the transfer and sharing of knowledge between universities and the promotion of academic solidarity across the world. UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs projects deal with training and research activities and cover all major fields of knowledge within UNESCO's competence such as Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture and Communication and Information. The principal beneficiaries of this programme are institutions of higher learning in developing countries and countries in transition.
